A "Pow Wow" is an annual, one-day training conference for adult leaders of Cub
Scouts, (boys in 1st through 5th grade). The conference consists of many classes for
the leaders to attend, covering topics ranging from camp cooking, to crafts and
games, to leadership ideas. One of the most useful items a leader can take home
from the conference is the Pow Wow Book. This book, created and published by
volunteer Scout leaders with many years of experience, contains information and
ideas to run the Cub Scout program for the following year.
Every Pow Wow book is unique in design, layout, content, and size. They vary from
council to council, and from year to year, but the majority follow the same basic format:
- Every month, there is a different “theme” for the Cub Scout leaders to plan
their meetings around. Twelve sections in the book take an in-depth look at
each month’s theme, and present theme-based ideas for:
- Activities for the Cub Scouts to complete in order to advance in rank
- Opening, closing, advancement, and campfire ceremonies
- Skits, stories, jokes, knock-knocks, and run-ons
- Songs, cheers, and applauses
- Arts and Crafts
- Games
- Camp cooking recipes
- A section for the Tiger Cub program, for boys in the 1st grade. This section
contains activities similar to those listed above, but are more “age-appropriate”.
- A section for the Webelos program, for boys in the 4th and 5th grade. This is
a more advanced Cub Scout program, preparing the boys to move up into Boy
Scouts. It consists of 20 Activity Badges, (similar to Boy Scout Merit Badges):
Aquanaut, Artist, Athlete, Citizen, Communicator, Craftsman, Engineer, Family
Member, Fitness, Forester, Geologist, Handyman, Naturalist, Outdoorsman,
Readyman, Scholar, Scientist, Showman, Sportsman, and Traveler. The
activities in this section are focused on completing the requirements to earn
each activity badge.
- A section dealing with pack and den administration, tips for leaders,
recognition ideas, etc.
But I’m not a Cub Scout leader. Can I still use the ideas on this CD?
Of course. Even though Pow Wow Books are geared towards Cub Scouts in the 1st -
5th grade, the ideas can easily be adapted to other programs. The leader of any
group of boys or girls can use these ideas, including:
- Sunday School, Awanas, and Vacation Bible School Teachers
- Primary and Elementary School Teachers
- Parents of Home-Schooled Children
- After-school and latchkey programs
- Girl Scout Leaders
- 4-H Clubs, FFA, Boys and Girls Clubs
- Babysitters and Day Care Providers
- Parents and Grandparents (Lots of great ideas for rainy day activities!)
What is on this CD?
Each CD-ROM contains 27 – 30 Pow Wow books from various years, and from various
Boy Scout councils. A book can range in size from 40 pages to over 700 pages. Every
page from each book has been scanned, and is presented in Adobe Acrobat .pdf
format. Each book has also been processed through Optical Character Recognition
software, and is available in plan text (.txt) format. This allows you to search for a
keyword in every book on the CD-ROM.
How can I get this CD-ROM for free?
If you have a Pow Wow book, please send us an email with the year, council name,
and theme of the Pow Wow book. We have hundreds of Pow Wow books in our
collection that have not yet been scanned, which are not on the CD-ROM list. If we
don't have a copy of your book, we'll ask you to mail it to us, and we'll scan it as
quickly as possible. We'll then mail the book back to you, along with a CD-ROM
containing the scanned image and text files of your Pow Wow book, and your free
copy of any volume in the CD-ROM library.
